Smart Automobile GmbH originated in 1994 from a joint venture between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz, with the first Swatchmobile concept unveiled in 1997. The marque launched commercially in 1998 as the Smart Fortwo, a two-seater city car featuring Tridion safety cells and innovative sandwich-floor design. In 2019, Smart re-entered the market as an all-electric brand under joint ownership of Mercedes-Benz and Geely, debuting the EQ Fortwo and EQ Forfour. By 2023, Smart sold over 100,000 EVs globally, with strong performance in European urban centers. The brand’s expansion continued in 2023 with the launch of the #1 SUV and #3 crossover, developed in partnership with Geely’s Smart joint venture. Smart’s urban mobility focus extends to subscription services and shared mobility partnerships in major cities such as Paris and Berlin.
