Mazda Motor Corporation began in 1920 as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd., founded by Jujiro Matsuda in Hiroshima. Initially producing machine tools, the company transitioned to vehicle manufacturing with the 1931 Mazda-Go three-wheeled truck. Mazda’s global breakthrough came with the rotary-engine RX-7 sports car (1978) and the MX-5 Miata roadster in 1989, which has sold over 1 million units. Emphasizing internal combustion efficiency, Mazda introduced Skyactiv technology in 2011, featuring high-compression gasoline engines, lightweight Skyactiv Body platforms, and refined transmissions across models such as the Mazda3 and CX-5. In 2023, Mazda delivered over 1.3 million vehicles, strengthening its presence in North America, Europe, and Asia. Mazda committed to phasing out diesel engines by 2023 and expanding electrification with plug-in hybrid and battery-electric variants.
