Tesla was founded in July 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, with early investment and leadership from Elon Musk. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, the company gained attention with its 2008 Roadster, the first production electric sports car, and broke new ground in 2012 with the luxury Model S sedan. Subsequent additions include the mass-market Model 3, the versatile Model Y crossover and the distinctive falcon-winged Model X SUV. Today, Tesla leads global electric-vehicle sales and operates Gigafactories around the world, supported by its Supercharger network. Known for its Autopilot driver-assist system and over-the-air software updates, Tesla continues expanding its lineup with the Cybertruck pickup and plans for a more affordable compact EV.
