Hongqi, meaning “Red Flag,” was launched on 1 August 1958 by FAW Group to build luxury sedans for Chinese state leaders. Early icons include the CA72 and the CA770 limousine, produced from 1963 to 1980. After a production hiatus, FAW revived Hongqi in the 1990s by rebadging imported Audi and Lincoln models. A strategic relaunch in Beijing during 2018 introduced a modern portfolio aimed at affluent customers, driving shipments from 33,000 units in 2018 to over 300,000 in 2021. Today’s line‑up comprises the H9 flagship sedan, E‑HS9 full‑size electric SUV, L5 ultra‑luxury limousine and QM7 minibus. Manufacturing takes place at FAW’s Changchun facilities, while the Red Flag Heritage Museum preserves the brand’s storied past. Hongqi integrates advanced connectivity, hybrid powertrains and Level 2+ driver assistance, targeting Middle Eastern and European markets by 2025.
