Lifan was founded in 1992 in Chongqing by Yin Mingshan, beginning as a motorcycle repair shop before expanding into vehicle manufacturing. It started automobile production in 2005 with license-built microvans and the LF6361 pickup, later developing models such as the 520 compact sedan, 620 midsize, X60 crossover, and Foison microvan. By 2017, Lifan operated 23 plants with sales in over 140 countries through its dealer network. Annual output peaked at around 200,000 units across passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles. The company also ventured into electric vehicles and partnered with MV Agusta for motorcycle distribution in China. Known for its diverse product range and international reach, Lifan exemplifies the growth of China’s private automotive sector.
